Janet was due to perform in Sao Paulo in Brazil on Friday this week but cancelled due to a conflict with a movie commitment. No further details have been released about the film and whether it involves an on-screen or off-screen role.

Number Ones tour to be extended

Published By Darren On April 11th 2011. Under Janet News

or Find Janet on Amazon

In an official press release today, it’s been confirmed that Janet’s current Number Ones: Up Close and Personal Tour will be extended to include a second north American leg. Whilst no details of dates or venues have been released, it’s expected that there will be further shows in Europe before Janet returns to the United States for further shows. The official press release is below in its entirety.

Success of Janet Jackson’s ‘Number Ones Tour’ prompts extension of U.S. and European legs until Fall

LOS ANGELES, April 11, 2011

As a result of massive sellouts for performances in Asia and North America, the JANET JACKSON ‘Number Ones: Up Close & Personal Tour’ is being expanded. JANET’s largest ever world tour will now be vastly extended to even more global cities in addition to the currently scheduled performances in London, Paris and Monte Carlo. The North American leg of the tour, which is currently underway, will be continued in the fall after a scheduled spring and summer in Europe. Originally slated as a world tour of 35 cities to match the 35 number one singles from her double-disc album, NUMBER ONES, JANET will now greatly exceed her planned dates. The high demand from key venues on several continents will bring Janet around the world and back again. Several of the concerts on the initial schedule were sold-out in the first ten minutes of availability.

The star, addressing the new scope of her concert commitment, observed,
“When creating music or a tour, I draw from what is going on in my life and hope that the fans relate to it. I am excited to know that the fans are having a great time at my shows and are asking for more. Thanks for all the love and your input on where I should take the show next. I’ll see you soon!” said JANET.

Critics have been as enthusiastic about her concert performances as have her fans. Here is a sampling of the media praise for her nightly performance of songs selected from her thirty-five number one singles:

“More than a week has passed since I saw JANET JACKSON at Radio City Music Hall, and I’m still smiling…” –New York Times, Rob Hoerburger

“This is one tour not to miss, a tour on which you can see a pop icon who has done it all, giving you her all.” –BET, Clay Cane

“This was a concert displaying her growth as an artist and the tracks released during the journey.” –Entertainment Weekly, Brad Wete

“The best Janet Jackson performance I’ve covered in 20-plus years.” — Chicago Tribune, Greg Kot

“Often imitated, never duplicated, Janet Jackson’s outbursts of meticulous choreography, sassy exclamations and smoldering gazes into the audience kept them on their feet for the entire two-hour set .” — MTV, Vaughn Schoonmaker

“The crowd, standing since Ms. Jackson hit the stage, was in full dance mode and remained so throughout the evening.” – The Republican, Donnie Moorehouse (CT)

“Friday’s concert was unusually self-knowing, as if she’d returned from a long silence and felt ready to give the truly boiled-down version of her career.” –NY Times, Ben Ratliff

“She did say it was going to be one that’s up close and personal. And boy, did Janet Jackson live up to that promise.”– Zaki Jufri I-S Magazine (Singapore)

“It was an evening to remember: her first Boston show since she came to town in 2001 for the ‘All for You’ tour.” – Boston Globe, James Reed

“A tightly choreographed greatest hits show, and that’s exactly what Jackson delivered Monday in the first of three sold-out concerts at the Chicago Theatre.”– Chicago Tribune, Greg Kot

“Janet Jackson’s show at the sold-out Wang Theatre last night didn’t really feel like a run-of-the-mill concert. It was more like reconnecting with the best friend you haven’t seen in years.”– Boston Herald, Lauren Carter

“She continues to be Miss Jackson – if you’re nasty – to paraphrase one of her biggest hits.” – Press of Atlantic City, by Robert DiGiacomo for At The Shore

The extension, by popular demand, reflects the icon’s great success earlier this year when her first book, “True You,” shot to the number one position on The New York Times best-seller list in the first week of its publication. “True You,” published by Karen Hunter Publishing, an imprint of Gallery Books at Simon & Schuster, chronicles Janet’s lifelong struggles with weight and self-esteem. The book is a self-help guide where Janet used anecdotes from her life to illustrate the power of self-esteem and her struggles to achieve it.

Shortly after topping the best-seller list as she has long done on the record-sales charts, JANET signed a deal with Lionsgate to produce a schedule of films for the famed Hollywood studio. JANET recently starred in Tyler Perry’s critically acclaimed motion picture “For Colored Girls.” JANET starred in as well as co-wrote and produced the song “Nothing” for the film “Why Did I Get Married Too?” JANET’s performance as Patricia in the film earned her an NAACP Image Award Nomination for Best Actress. JANET’s performance of “Nothing” achieved number one status on iTunes. Each of those films was distributed by Lionsgate.

Janet speaks about Gaga, Beyonce and her upcoming album

Janet speaks about Gaga, Beyonce and her upcoming album

In a new interview with MassLive.com, Janet has spoken about her upcoming album and how she thinks Lady Gaga is “amazing”.

You’ve recently released the book “True You” When did you first think about writing a book, and do you feel you accomplished your goals with its publication?
I have been thinking of writing a book for a few years now. I didn’t want to write an autobiography yet because I still have so much to accomplish in my life. I wanted to write a book that everyone, especially kids and teens, can relate to. I think that we were able to accomplish this. “True You” is about self esteem and how to get it, and I believe we accomplished that. I hope that everyone who reads it will know that they are perfect just the way they are. It has been a long road for me to get to this point, but I really enjoy my life now. I want that for everyone who reads “True You.”

Has writing the book been a cathartic experience for you?

Yes it has. As I said, it is not an autobiography, but it does have antidotes from my life. I talk about things that I thought I was over. But when writing about them, I learned that was not entirely the case. It has helped me deal with some unresolved issues.

The book reveals a sense of insecurity that you felt for much of your life. Some of it seems to have started on the set of “Good Times,” when they asked you to lose weight – at the age of 11. Looking back, do you think there were things that your family could have handled differently to improve your self-confidence during those difficult years? After all, you were just a kid.

I think that all people are different. I was the type of kid that held everything in. I am still very much like that. My family didn’t even know that I had these feelings. I do think that that time of my life affected the person that I have become. Kids are so impressionable. It is important that we all remember that we are role models, someone is looking up to us and our actions have an effect.

What do you say now when you meet kids who you know are struggling with insecurity?

I try to let them know that they are perfect just as they are. They should not listen to the media, or other people who try to tell us that we should look or act a specific way. Unless we are being morally incorrect, we need to stay true to ourselves.

Let’s talk music. The “Up Close and Personal World Tour” has had a lot of fan input, including having your fans help select the cities in which you are performing. I believe you’re also trying to make it more intimate than some of your previous tours. How do you achieve that when you are playing in some large venues?

I have been truly blessed by the response from my fans. This tour is a thank you to all the fans that have supported me over the years. I was performing a private date at Radio City Music Hall. It is a more intimate theater and all I could think about was how much fun I was having. Being able to look out into the audience and see every face in the house was amazing, and I thought, this is how I want to do my next tour.

I have been selecting venues that are more intimate, not the arenas that I have performed in the past. Almost all of the venues are more intimate. I have had to add additional dates to many locations because of the response but I am very excited about performing for the fans in this way. It’s not about pyrotechnics, it is a love affair between me and all the fans. I can’t wait to get to Uncasville and see everyone.

You have had some astounding sales figures through the years, including selling more than 100 million records worldwide and scoring more than 30 No. 1 hits. You’re one of the best-selling artists, female or male, of all-time. Did you ever have any sibling rivalry with Michael concerning your own success? Was he ever jealous of what you had accomplished?

No. All my family has enjoyed amazing opportunities and we have been blessed to enjoy some success. I am happy that I have written music that the fans can relate to.

Your shows have always had a lot of choreography, tons of lighting and a combination of playfulness and eroticism on stage. On past tours during “Would You Mind” you’ve brought male members of the audience on stage and teased them while whispering and touching them. I saw Beyonce’s last tour and she’s incorporated a very similar thing into her act. Was she stealing your idea and do you consider that a compliment? Or did you also get the idea from earlier performers?

I am flattered when artists are inspired by what I have done. Imitation is the best form of flattery. Performing is an art for me. Just like when I write my music, I am inspired by whatever is going on in my life at that time. I guess you would need to ask Beyonce if she was inspired by me… I can’t really answer that question for you. The idea for that section of my show came to me when I was creating the “janet” Tour. That is where it all began for me and it has become more playful with each tour.

When you’re performing all these highlights from your career on this new tour, have there been moments that caught you emotionally, songs that mean something extraordinarily special to you, especially when reflecting on them years later?

There are times while performing that (memories) will enter my mind of that period in my life. They’ve all been wonderful thoughts.

When you recorded “Got ‘Til It’s Gone,” it surprised some people to learn that you were a big fan of Joni Mitchell. Are there other artists whom you admire that some people might not expect?

I love Joni. She is so talented. Growing up we always listened to all types of music. In one room, you would hear classical music, in another, jazz. As kids we would sing while we were doing our chores. Writing music while doing cleaning the kitchen… (laughs). I was inspired by jazz, bossa nova, samba, and artists like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Sly & the Family Stone. With bossa nova, it’s the rhythms and melodies. The mood and tone put me in such a euphoric state. I fell in love with it the first time I listened to it. With jazz, I found the moodiness very sexy. I love the beat of the drums.

When do you think you’ll be doing another studio album, and do you think the experience of writing the book will be reflected in your next music?

I plan to go into the studio later this year. I want to take my time with it. I don’t know what it will be yet, I have a few ideas but I want to be inspired by what is going on in my life. I hope that the fans will relate to it. It is possible that “True You” will have an influence in what I write… I have grown from writing the book, so I am sure some of that will come through in my music.

What’s it like performing in China? And does anyone in positions of authority ever give you a hard time about your stage attire; like that futuristic cat suit you’re wearing on stage on this tour?

(laughs) … I loved performing in all of Asia. The fans are so enthusiastic. I get so much energy from the audience. Nobody seems to mind what I am wearing. I am telling a story… from the songs I am singing to the choreography and videos to my costumes. We are just trying to put on a show that will let the fans escape from their troubles for a few hours and just have a good time.

You’ve said recently that you’re finally getting to the point where you can think about Michael and smile, thinking about the good times you had. What are some of those memories that make you smile the most?

Those memories are very personal to me and I would like to keep them to myself.

You’ve grown up in the spotlight for almost your entire life Have other people – from outside your family – who shared a similar experience – ever been able to help you put it all into perspective?

I have been very fortunate that God plays such an important role in my life. I start each day with a prayer. I think that relationship is the one that has been most influential in putting everything into perspective for me.

How much did watching the Motown performers such as Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder – and of course the Jackson 5 – play a factor in your musical development, and your approach to performing on stage today?

They are all such amazing performers. They take such great care of their audience and give so much. I guess that would be the biggest influence… Appreciate your fans and let them have an amazing time with you.

What’s your take on some of the newer female stars of the era – specifically, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Katy Perry?

They are all so talented. I love what is happening in music today. I have been following Gaga for a long time. She is amazing… I am really enjoying Bruno Mars as well.

Tell me a bit about the “20 Under 20” program and what you are hoping it will accomplish?

We all see so much negative news today. It is everywhere. I want to acknowledge kids that are doing great things to change their communities. I am so inspired by these kids and I hope that everyone will see them, and what they are doing and be inspired to do something positive as well. That is why I am asking friends, neighbors, teachers and parents to go to my website, janetjackson.com and nominate the kids they know. I will give tickets to up to 20 kids and the first people to nominate them to my show and meet them back stage. I am having so much fun meeting them and learning what is inspiring them. They are amazing!

Lastly, with being an author, an actress, a performer, a recording star and so much more, you always seem incredibly busy. What’s your favorite way of kicking back and just relaxing?

I love to go anywhere where there is water. I love the beach… Just to relax in the sun and look at the ocean. That is what I love doing most when I am not working.

In a new article in today’s The Sunday Times, it reports that Janet is preparing an European Tour for 2010. In an interview with Hattie Collins, Janet talks about her inspiration for Rhythm Nation and her thoughts on acts such as Lady Gaga and Alicia Keys.

Janet Jackson on surviving the family circus and missing Michael
The littlest Jackson is back in the limelight. Janet talks parents, politics, Michael — oh, and music
Hattie Collins

There are many places you might expect to find an A-list star in Hollywood, but a scruffy dance studio at the wrong end of the Walk of Fame isn’t the first that springs to mind. The homeless and the addicted hustle the star-spotting tourists who wander wide-eyed into souvenir shops selling Michael Jackson memorabilia, utterly unaware that, two floors above them, his youngest sister is rehearsing the choreography for her new single, Make Me.

“I love the natural light,” says Janet Jackson, nodding towards the huge windows that look out onto the gritty streets below. She’s devoid of make-up and dressed in black tracksuit bottoms and a grey cashmere top, a low-key look that matches the location. There is no big entourage in tow, either, just her personal assistant and a publicist. It’s surprising to find such a huge celebrity in such understated circumstances, particularly given the intense scrutiny the Jackson family is under following the loss of its most famous member in June this year.

“People don’t really know, they don’t look in,” she says, staring back to the boulevard once more. “Nobody notices.” Brief respite, perhaps — since she appeared on stage with the Jackson 5 at the age of seven, all people have done is peer portentously at Janet Damita Jo Jackson’s professional and private life. “Certain aspects [of fame] aren’t easy, but I’ve been fortunate,” the 43-year-old says of life in front of the lens. “There are always paparazzi, but there are restaurants or places that they don’t know you frequent. And the people there are loyal, so they stay quiet.”

Unlike some of her siblings, Jackson knows about discretion. Since Michael’s death, she has been the quietest of the clan. Generally, despite a celebrated singing career that has ranged from the provocative to the political, she has kept her private life just that. Nobody knew she had married the choreographer René Elizondo in 1991 until they divorced in 2003. Her relationship with the producer Jermaine Dupri, which ended earlier this year, was also kept relatively clear of tabloid tittle-tattle.

“I think, to this day, people view me as a very shy person,” she says. “I don’t think I’m shy. I’m just quiet until I get to know you. I sit back and I watch and I observe. Though I’m someone that loves life, loves to have fun — I love being around my family. And I’m ambitious.”

Driven she absolutely is. Over the three decades of her recording career, she has reinvented herself almost as many times as Madonna. She has done political, playful, sensual, charitable and, following that infamous Super Bowl boob, controversial. Initially, however, she was little more than a pop puppet. “I was never really into the earlier stuff,” she remarks of the trite teenage albums Dream Street and Janet Jackson. “At that point, my mind was set on going to college, but I did music because it was what my father wanted me to do.”

A notorious disciplinarian, Joe Jackson was incredibly tough on his children. Janet has said in the past that the rigorous regimen was a double-edged sword: “Because of it, I’ve been able to achieve a lot of things that I wanted to. Granted, it took a lot of childhood away from me, but to have that focus has truly blessed me.” She wrote her first song at nine, appeared on the family variety show the same year and signed a recording deal at 14. She has never ridden the subway, and can’t go out for coffee, but she doesn’t seem regretful. “I can’t say I miss it, because I don’t experience it. And don’t get me wrong, I still get to enjoy it here and there.”

Jackson finally took charge of her career on her 1986 album Control, when she began writing, producing and playing keyboards. “My brothers took piano lessons when we were kids, so I wanted to take piano lessons. Then they quit because they went on tour, so I quit because I didn’t want to take them by myself. But that’s where it started from; I started playing by ear.”

If Control, with lyrics such as “When I was 17 I did what people told me/Did what my father said and let my mother mould me”, was about cutting the apron strings, 1989’s multiplatinum-seller Rhythm Nation 1814 saw Jackson develop a social conscience. “There was a major drug issue back then,” she recalls. “Crack cocaine was being introduced in the inner cities, and it was cheap. I remember seeing something on CNN about a little kid who was homeless, sleeping in the back of a car. And that was what it all sparked from.”

As well as politics, she has drawn inspiration from all manner of places: “I used to watch a lot of MGM movies, so Sammy Davis Jr.” She is also an unlikely fan of that mammary-mad British milkman Benny Hill. “I love [him]. When I was in school, I would watch it before going to sleep.” Later albums such as The Velvet Rope explored Jackson’s sexual side, a subject she continued to discuss as recently as her 2008 release, Discipline. Yet her new single, Make Me, recorded for her greatest-hits compilation, The Best, is simply about partying: “I think people want escapism right now, because there’s so much going on,” she says. “There’s so much heartache, there’s so much pain, there’s so much death. It’s a sad world right now.”

Although she might not be singing about it, Jackson is still in touch with her political side. “I think people are giving [Obama] really such a hard time. Everyone wants everything to turn around immediately. It took us how many years to get to this point? People say, ‘His first 100 days in office, what has he done?’ You can’t do that to the man. It’s not going to happen tomorrow. It’s going to take us time to get out of it.”

Having sold more than 100m albums, Jackson has had an impact on popular culture that shouldn’t be underestimated. This was a young black woman who wrote, produced and played much of her music, and whose cutting-edge choreography continues to inspire the newer generation of acts. Cheryl Cole’s recent X Factor performance tipped a military-clad nod towards Jackson’s Rhythm Nation iconography, while Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera have cited her as an inspiration. “She was one of the first female pop icons that I could relate to,” says Rihanna. “She was so vibrant, she had so much energy. She still has power. I’ve seen her on stage, and she can stand there for 20 minutes and have the whole arena scream at her. You have to love Janet.”

Jackson is appreciative of, if not fawning about, the flattery bestowed on her by today’s pop princesses. “I think it’s great for someone to emulate you,” she says slowly. “It lets you know that they’ve watched your work and admired what it is you’ve done.” For her part, Jackson “enjoys” Lady Gaga and “loves” Alicia Keys, for both her music and her spirit. “She has such a beautiful soul. I love her for that. There’s not a lot of them.”

Preparing to put herself back among the Rihannas and Gagas, Jackson is promoting The Best while preparing a European tour for 2010 and writing a book, True You, which, she says, will look at her struggles with weight gain and self-esteem. Yet for all her insecurities — she was quoted recently as saying that she hated her smile — Jackson seems strong. There’s no high-pitched simpering, no glibness, just steady, if occasionally guarded, opinion. It does, however, take time for her to be drawn on Michael. She finally opens up when pressed about her tribute performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in September. “It hit me before I was about to do the performance, and it hit me when we were in rehearsal. There was a huge image of him on this screen, and I started to cry. I had to step away.” She saw her brother two days before his death, and for months after avoided watching television, but his image is impossible to escape. “You know, a day doesn’t go by where you don’t think about him,” she says. “It’s always there, in every sense. “But it will get better. It’s not easy, but I know with time it will get easier.” She stops. “But it will never be easy. It’s my brother.”

Almost as soon as the M-word is mentioned, the PR machine kicks in, and Jackson must return to rehearsals. What motivates her to keep going? Surely she could sit back, admire the awards, the accolades, the achievements? “I think it’s just passion. That’s all it is. Would you do it for free, that’s the question. And if you’re passionate enough, you will. That’s what I think the secret to success is. You don’t want to stop, so, as long as you can, you keep going.” She pauses. “I hadn’t listened to any of the old stuff until we put this compilation together. The body of work trips me out, but I almost forget it’s there. I don’t look back, I just try to keep going.”
